AEO Agency vs AI Visibility Software: Which Do You Need?
In short: Software shows where AI assistants mention you and suggests what to fix; an agency does the fixing. Self-serve AI visibility tools start at $29 to $295 a month, while published agency prices among the firms we checked start at about $3,000 a month. Choose software if someone on your team has time every week to write pages, run outreach and fix listings; choose an agency if no one does. We sell agency work, so weigh our view accordingly.
What AI visibility software does
Most tools do three things: they ask AI assistants a list of questions (prompts) on a schedule and record whether your brand appears, they show which websites the assistants cite, and they suggest actions. Several now draft content or run "agents" too.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29/month (15 prompts) | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot | Audits and optimization recommendations | Dedicated success manager on Enterprise |
| HubSpot AEO (beta) | $50/month (25 prompts) | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity | Recommendations; content tools in Marketing Hub | None listed on the AEO page |
| LLM Pulse | $58/month, or €49 (50 prompts, weekly) | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews | Content drafts ("GEO Writer") | Account manager on Enterprise |
| Peec AI | $95/month (50 prompts) | Three models you choose | Recommended actions and agent actions | Dedicated support on Enterprise |

What an AEO agency does
An agency does the work the software points to. Depending on the agency, that usually means:
- Research: which questions your buyers ask AI assistants, who gets named and which sources the assistants rely on.
- Pages on your site: comparison pages, service pages, guides and FAQs that answer those questions clearly, with your real facts.
- Outside sources: getting onto the lists, directories and review sites the assistants read; asking real clients for reviews; helpful, disclosed answers in communities.
- Technical fixes: crawler access, conflicting facts, schema and similar.
- Measurement: re-running the same questions and reporting what changed.
Software can draft a page and even an outreach email. It cannot build the relationship that gets you onto a "best agencies" list, collect reviews from your clients, or decide what is true about your company. That is the main difference.
Among the agencies we checked, published prices start at about $3,000 a month (WebFX) and range to $5,000–$12,000 a month for a B2B SaaS specialist (DerivateX) and $120,000 a year and up (Omniscient Digital). Many agencies do not publish prices. See Best AEO and GEO Agencies for B2B Companies for nine of them, including us.
The real cost of software is your time
A $95 tool is cheaper than a $3,000 agency only if someone acts on what it shows. Every recommendation becomes a task: a page to write and publish, a directory profile to fix, a list owner to email, a client to ask for a review. If those tasks pile up, the tool becomes a report nobody reads.
So before you choose, answer one question honestly: who on our team will do this work every week, and for how many hours? If there is a name, software may be enough. If there is not, the cheaper option is often the one that gets the work done.
Which fits you?
- You have a marketer or SEO with spare hours: start with software. A low-cost tracker plus your team's time is usually the best value.
- You want guidance but will do the work yourself: look at tools that include a strategist. Goodie lists AEO strategist support on every plan; AthenaHQ and Profound offer specialists on enterprise plans.
- No one has time, or you need outreach and content done: hire an agency. Ask what it will do each month, how it measures, and what it will not promise (see How to Choose an AI Visibility Agency).
- You are an enterprise with a team: enterprise software and an agency often work together; several agencies use these tools themselves.
The two are not exclusive. NoGood says it uses Goodie AI, WebFX has its own tracking platform, and we use a tracking tool ourselves.
Questions people ask
Is AI visibility software worth it for a small business?
It can be, if you act on it. The cheapest entry plans cost $29 to $99 a month on the tools' own sites. If no one has time to write pages, fix listings and do outreach, the data will not change anything, and a small done-for-you service may be better value.
Can I do AEO myself with a tool?
Yes, many teams do. The work is mostly clear pages that answer buyer questions, accurate profiles on the sites AI assistants read, real reviews, and fixing conflicting facts. A tool helps you see where to start and whether anything changed. Start with the questions your buyers actually ask.
What is the cheapest way to start?
Free checks from HubSpot, Ahrefs and Semrush show a quick picture of how AI assistants describe you. You can also ask your buyers' questions yourself in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and note who is named. For ongoing tracking, the cheapest paid plans we found were Otterly.AI at $29 a month and HubSpot AEO at $50 a month.
Do AEO agencies use these tools?
Many do. NoGood says it uses Goodie AI, WebFX runs its own OmniSEO® platform, and several tools sell agency plans. We use a tracking tool too. Ask any agency which tool it uses and whether you can see the raw results.
